MLS Secondary Transfer Window News Roundup

I don’t pretend to be the most well-sourced individual in the world, everyone I’ve ever reached out to I found on transfermarkt first. However, that avenue is occasionally fruitful enough that I can report what I know.

I know enough right now I figured it best to put it all in one article rather than several that would compete for your precious clicks. So with the Secondary Transfer Window opening in just a smidge over a week, here’s what I know. Fair warning, not all of it is strictly Nashville related, but news is still fun.

Alberth Elis, ST, Girondins de Bordeaux

Friends of Soundwave Chris Ivey and Nashville SC Stats (follow both of them, they’re great) first dove into the prospect of Alberth Elis coming to Nashville, and thanks to them for the idea, because I’ve done some digging and asking around.

I spoke with a source from Elis’ agency Futbol Consultants, and I can tell you that “a few different” MLS clubs are sniffing around the situation with him. My source couldn’t tell me which clubs exactly, but I think you need not look much farther than the usual suspects as far as this window is concerned.

LAFC was working on a deal for Elis in January that fell through due to salary concerns, but I think it safe to assume they’re still interested. Nashville, Vancouver, Minnesota, and maybe Houston will be on the market for a DP striker this summer, so any of them probably apply as well.

However, before your hopes get too high, talks between any club and Elis’ camp are very early in the process, though there is interest from Elis in returning to MLS.

Isaac Castillo, CM, Marathón

Not much has changed since you last heard from me on Isaac Castillo, in all honesty. If you’ll remember, our last report confirmed that Philadelphia had joined Colorado and Nashville as clubs to express interest in the 20 year old Honduran.

Castillo had a trial with Philadelphia, and I was told Nashville would hold off until early July before coming to any kind of concrete decision on whether to fully pursue Castillo. With both Philadelphia and Nashville, it’s expected Castillo would start in MLS Next Pro before transitioning to the first team.

Suhander Zuñiga, LB, Deportivo San Carlos

I spoke with Jose Rodriguez of Futbol Consultants and learned that multiple MLS clubs were also monitoring 26 year old Costa Rican international Suhander Zuñiga. His contract expires in December, but I wouldn’t rule out a potential summer move.

He went on loan from Deportivo San Carlos to LD Alajuelense this season, and made 17 appearances, including both of Alajuelense’s games in CONCACAF Champions League play.

Also very early on him, and I also don’t know exactly which clubs are interested. Charlotte, Philadelphia, and New York Red Bulls were floated by Tom Bogert as clubs that might be in the market for a left back, perhaps it’s any or all of them.

Edwin Munguia, LW/CM, CDS Vida

Chicago and Austin are two clubs interested in 17-year old Honduran Edwin Munguia. He was named to the Best XI of the most recent CONCACAF Under-17 Championship. Obviously, given his age, he can’t transfer to MLS yet, but I’m told that Chicago has been monitoring him for some time, while Austin recently reached out as well.

Given the fact that he can’t move abroad just yet (his 17th birthday was May 3rd), I wouldn’t be shocked in the slightest if interest in Munguia picks up at a rapid pace. His international pedigree also speaks for itself to that effect. I’m also told that he’s nearing a deal to play for Motagua in Honduras next season, that will make him “probably the best paid young player” in Honduras, and he’ll also be able to accept any trial offers that come his way.
